Making Stamps

I enjoyed a taste of stamp carving at an art class several years ago, and had the pleasure of experimenting with it again last Saturday.

Thank you to Jennifer and Hannah for opening their studio for art time, as well as to Misty Mawn's beautiful book Unfurling for the project inspiration.

Happy creating~ Megan

Sunrise Glow

I ate breakfast alone this morning,
Middle Sister being sick,
Mom up with her in the night,
Youngest Sister sleeping in,
and Dad away with work.

The world was dark at first
then an orange glow
illuminated the houses
outside the west-facing kitchen window.

Recycling needed to be placed by the curb
on the east side of our house
so I grabbed my camera,
went out into the winter wind,
and looked expectantly at the sky.

I was not disappointed.

As the day grew older,
the sun went away
but that simply made me treasure
the morning's splendor even more.

Weaving Dreams

It began with this scarf I saw on Pinterest .
I went to the link and found this delightful blog.
While visiting that blog, this post about weaving introduced me to this loom.
I have always wanted to weave and seeing this made me realize that my dream was possible.
So I put this loom on my Christmas wish list,
Was surprised and delighted by it on Christmas morning,
And began to weave.

The green and blue scarf is my first weaving attempt, made with Nature Spun Worsted Weight Spring Green and Blue Boy yarn.

I made this one for my mom's birthday using Berroco Vintage yarn, color 5194.

I made this one for Middle Sister's birthday using Caron Simply Soft Blackberry and Passion yarn.

I fell in love with this one, made with color 654 Fame Trend yarn, and am wearing it myself.

As for now I am convinced that weaving is a very beautiful and magical thing.

Wishing you woven delight~ Megan

The Pink Forest Cake

It was an experiment,

inspired by Black Forest Cakes (we substituted tea for coffee and made royal icing instead of meringue),

that we tried on Middle Sister's birthday,

and it turned into a delicious flop.

Happy baking~ Megan

Giving All

I have a big notebook dedicated to magazine clippings. This picture is of one of the pages, a page full of words I love. This past week I have been thinking about words in the context of choosing one as a name for the year. On Sunday I posted that All was my word of choice, but All has not been feeling quite right to me. More and more, the word Give has come to my mind. It seems as though giving requires all-- knowing both what all matters and where all comes from-- it is just a more practicable name for the year. I now see that it snuck into the last line of my All post. That I am giving my all. That is something good to practice-- always.

Continuing to give thanks. . .

All, This Year

Last January was the first time I named my year.
I chose the word grace.
It easily applied to whatever I did.
It guided me through many new experiences.
How should I go about anything and everything?
With grace.

I enjoyed having this word.
I knew I wanted to name my year again.
As 2011 drew to a close, I began to think and pray about a new word.
The one that came to my mind was all.

I wondered about it.
All is very different from grace.
It is much harder to define.
It was not something I wanted to be.
Yet I continued to hear it.
Hear it until I knew.

My word for the year is all.
I am curious about what it will come to mean to me.
Until then I will have to simply give it my all.

If you chose a word for this year, I would love to hear it. Blessings~ Megan
